HISTORY

ASSAULT AND ABUSE SERVICES OF STEPHENSON COUNTY (AASSC) is a non-for-profit, social service agency providing sexual abuse and sexual assault prevention and treatment service to children, adults, and families living in Stephenson County since the mid-1970s. The agency offers three services that work to build a safer community for you.

Our Treatment Program provides contractual services of therapy and support for families referred to the agency by the State of Illinois’ Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Beginning in 1975, the agency became a Licensed Child Welfare Agency and contracted with DCFS to provide these services.

In 1984, our Prevention Program Educators began visiting the schools of Stephenson County annually to teach children about personal safety. The program continues to promote awareness of sexual violence problems and provide opportunities to develop skill-building techniques for evaluating appropriate solutions to those problems.

Our Sexual Assault Services, in place since 1991, provides support, information, medical and legal advocacy, and therapy to victims of sexual assault and abuse from Stephenson County. This service is a comprehensive crisis and treatment program that serves victims of all ages and their families at no cost.

AASSC was originally formed in response to the growing problem of child abuse under the name of Stephenson County Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Prevention continues to be a focus of our mission today.
